StoryRonaldo Has a Bad Day

It was bad day on top of bad day for Cristiano Ronaldo. Many can point fingers at his extremely poor performance in this close Group B win for Portugal. During the game Denmark fans continued to chant Lionel Messi's name at Ronaldo. It did not seem to make a difference at all, as the issues seemed to come from inside Ronaldo.

After the game, a poorly conceived comment to the press may have been the final straw in an already terrible day for Cristiano Ronaldo. The exact quote is as follows...

“You know where [Messi] was at this time [last year]? Do you know? He was being eliminated in the Copa America, in his own country," Ronaldo said at the post-game press conference. "I think that's worse, no? “

The unfortunate fact is that the comment is actually wrong. While Messi had many issues later in the quarterfinals, his performance during the group stage was easily part of what kept the Argentina team undefeated. Ronaldo was, in his defense, unprepared to make the comment to the press. He was already having a bad day, and most likely never expected the chants and chides from spectators to fixate on Messi.

It can also be said that the European Championship has nothing at all to do with Messi or the group stage that that led to disappointment for Argentina. There was no doubt a bit of group psychology that took a few scattered chants and turned them into an embarrassing fiasco. Cristiano Ronaldo came to the game with some internal doubts, that much was obvious, but the comparison was a stretch at best.

There is no doubt that with his previous accomplishments and talent that Ronaldo will survive this to fight another day. Every person in every career has bad days that only seem to get worse. This was no doubt one of those for him and will be followed by better days to come.
