Despite being on course to create a new record in the Champions League for the most number of goals scored in a single season, Cristiano Ronaldo was not used in the second leg quarter-final match against Borussia Dortmund.
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said ahead of the match that Ronaldo’s participation in the match was highly doubtful due to a recent injury problem. However, he surprised everyone by naming the Portuguese superstar on the bench.
Ronaldo was visibly frustrated during the 2-0 defeat for the Spanish club. However, there was joy for Ronaldo and the Real Madrid camp after they managed to go through 3-2 on aggregate.
Despite being named on the bench, Ronaldo was not utilised throughout the 90 minutes. After the match, Ancelotti has stated that the plan was never to use the 29-year-old irrespective of the outcome since he felt that it was too risky for the player. Ronaldo has been suffering from an injury and it has not been clear how long it will take for him to recover fully. Marco Reus scored both goals for Dortmund, as they almost managed an improbable comeback against the German outfit.
Ancelotti has definitely ruled out Ronaldo for the upcoming league match against Almeria, which Real Madrid need to win at all costs.
"He wasn't okay. We decided not to take any risks. We're hoping he recovers well and is ready for the semi-finals. It isn't a major problem but it was a risk with such a big game. He'll have time to recover well and play. I think he'll be able to play on Saturday," said Ancelotti after the quarter-finals. This is the third consecutive semi-final that Real Madrid will be appearing. They have lost the last two, but will be hoping for better omens this time around.
