Rafa Benitez refused to get carried away with all the talk about Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the weekend’s match against Villarreal.
The team has enjoyed a five match winning run in all competitions and it has put behind memories of the thrashing from Barcelona in the last El Clasico. However, it has done little to close down the gap in the league table. Madrid continue to trail Barcelona by four points with the season about to go into a winter break. It is imperative that the club at least maintain this difference and not drop any more points.
The reason 8-0 win over Malmö FF has been overshadowed about the comments made by Cristiano Ronaldo after the match. The winger scored an amazing four goals to take his Champions League to 11 goals. This puts him comfortably ahead of players like Robert Lewandowski, who were seen as a potential challenger to his European record. After the game, Ronaldo claimed that his recent poor form since the start of the season has been down to personal problems. He also claimed that he would not rule out a move away from Madrid in the summer. Ronaldo has been linked with Paris St Germain and Manchester United.
Rafa Benitez, though, chose to not talk about the winger and this raises speculation that he does not get along well with the Portuguese.“I’m not going to go into details about his problems because it is him that has talked about it. For me he has always put in good performances and now it’s paying off.Now that he is scoring I’m calm because that will give him more confidence and help him to score even more. We’re getting to know each other, adapting to each other and working together," said Benitez ahead of the game at Villarreal.
