StoryRONALDO FAILS TO SCORE AGAINST ATLETICO

Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score against Spanish champions Atletico Madrid and it proved costly for Manchester United as they crashed out of the Champions League this season at the round of 16 stage. Ronaldo has a good record against Atletico Madrid dating back to his time at Real Madrid over a decade ago, but he was unable to use it to his advantage over the two legs of the last 16 tie.

In the first leg between hosts Atletico Madrid and Manchester United at the new Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, Cristiano Ronaldo was largely anonymous as the two teams played out a 1-1 draw. Fellow Portuguese international Joao Felix gave Atletico Madrid the lead in the first half before winger Anthony Elanga secured the draw for Manchester United with his goal in the final ten minutes of the game.

For the second leg at Old Trafford, Manchester United were slight favourites but they could not make it count after losing 1-0 at home to their Spanish opponents. Brazilian left-back Renan Lodi scored the only goal of the match in the Atletico Madrid colours. Lodi scored on 41 minutes and the Spaniards thereby kept Manchester United at bay for the remainder of the game bar the fantastic second half save made by Jan Oblak in the Atletico Madrid goal to deny Raphael Varane the chance to score his first Manchester United via a header.
The first strike from Lodi ensured that Atletico Madrid progress into the quarterfinals via a 2-1 aggregate win. They are in the quarterfinals with teams such as Liverpool, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Benfica.
On their part, Manchester United need to finish in fourth spot to qualify for Champions League football next season. The Red Devils are presently one point adrift of Arsenal in that race for fourth.
