Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso says that it would be hard to look past Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo for potential FIFA Ballon d’Or award winners this year. Both these superstars have once again made it to the shortlist for the coveted individual award. Other names on the shortlist include the likes of Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Even though the likes of Ronaldo and Messi have had great seasons individually, Alonso reckons that FIFA should also take a look at the team performances.Neuer has been for some time regarded as the best goalkeeper in the world.
He proved this once again after managing to win two major titles with Bayern Munich. He then went on to win the World Cup title for the first time in his career with Germany. During a World Cup year, the coveted award usually goes to the player who has done well in the international tournament. Ronaldo may have won the Champions League and have also scored more than 50 goals last season, but Alonso reckons thatNeuer should also be given a look. Personally, it was a disappointing World Cup for Alonso after the Spanish team were knocked out in the group stages. The 34-year-old, who recently moved to Bayern Munich, was instrumental in helping Madrid win the 10th European cup although he missed the final due to suspension.
“It’s a very general question: is the award about individual, personal performances? In this case, it would be tough against Messi and Ronaldo. Or is it about the team’s success? Then the Germans have the best chance. I’ll cross my fingers for my Bayern colleagues. If Manuel Neuer were to win it, it would be just. I have to say that he’s not only the best goalkeeper I’ve played with but also outstanding as the 11th outfielder,” said Alonso.
