StoryJUVENTUS SET FOR A NEW SKIPPER

Italian giants Juventus are expected to appoint a new club captain in the coming weeks ahead of the new season which starts in the summer. Current Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini is expected to leave the club at the end of this season at the age of 36. The veteran centre back has few months to run on his current deal with the Old Lady and he will leave when the contract ends.

Italian international Chiellini has battled with various injury issues in recent months and he's no longer a guaranteed starter in the Juventus team. The news of a potential new skipper for Juventus was revealed by Tuttosport. The report from the Italian newspaper stated that Cristiano Ronaldo or young Dutch centre back Matthijs De Ligt will take over the armband from Chiellini when the Italian ends his playing career in Turin.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Matthijs De Ligt are not newcomers to the armband. Ronaldo is the Portuguese national team skipper, while De Ligt was the Ajax Amsterdam captain when the youthful team stunned European football by eliminating holders Real Madrid and Juventus in the Champions League during the 2017/18 season. De Ligt and Ajax Amsterdam reached the semis before they were eliminated by Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur in dramatic fashion.

The future of Cristiano Ronaldo is far from sure unlike De Ligt who's expected to be a Juventus player for many more years. Ronaldo will have a year to run on his Juventus deal by this summer and that has led to rumours of a move back to Real Madrid and Manchester United, two of his former clubs. Juventus Vice President Pavel Nedved has already told media outlet DAZN that Ronaldo won't leave the Italian team in the summer.
